Our story

About the Villa

A stone house on a Sahyadri cliff, welcoming families, friends and celebrations since 1995.

The Cliffhanger

Tarzan's villa, since 1995

The Cliffhanger began in 1995 as a home built for the love of the wild – a sturdy stone house on a ridge above Gaganbawda, where the land drops away into the forests of the Sahyadris.

Its nickname, Tarzan's Villa in the Wilderness, says it all. This is a place for people who like their mornings misty, their evenings quiet and their views endless – where the loudest sounds are birdsong and the wind moving through the valley.

Over the years the villa has grown into a retreat for families, friends and celebrations, while keeping the spirit of a private home. You'll find antlers and wildlife paintings on the walls, carved wooden furniture, a dining hall of painted stone beneath a round skylight, and a lawn on the cliff's edge where the only neighbours are the hills.

When you stay here, the whole villa is yours. Our caretaker looks after the house, breakfast is on us for vacation stays, and the rest of the day is yours to fill – or not.

The wild around us

Gaganbawda, where the ghats begin

Gaganbawda sits high on the crest of the Sahyadri range in Kolhapur district, where the Deccan plateau meets the steep ghats that tumble down towards the Konkan coast.

It is one of the rainiest corners of Maharashtra, and it shows. Through the monsoon the hills turn a deep, glowing green, clouds pour over the ridges and seasonal waterfalls appear on every cliff face. After the rains come crisp, clear mornings and long golden evenings; in summer, the breeze on the ridge keeps the afternoons gentle.

The forests around the villa are alive with birds – peafowl, kingfishers and egrets among them – and the wider Kolhapur forests are known for the Indian gaur. Closer to home, langurs and monkeys are regular (and mischievous) visitors, so keep an eye on your sunglasses!

Days here are best spent outdoors: walks along quiet forest roads, drives down the winding ghats, visits to old forts and temples, or simply watching the light change across the valley from the lawn.
